Lost your work permit – Can it be re-issued?
The work permit is one of the most important documents for foreign employees working in Vietnam. However, in cases where the permit is lost, damaged, or contains outdated information while still valid, foreign workers
can apply for a re-issuance in accordance with Vietnamese law.
Cases eligible for work permit re-issuance
According to
Article 12 – Decree 152/2020/NĐ-CP, a valid work permit can be re-issued in the following cases:
- The permit is lost
- The permit is damaged
- There is a change in personal information: full name, nationality, passport number, or work location
Steps to apply for a re-issued work permit
✅ Step 1: Report the loss to local authorities
- Go to the commune/ward police office where you reside to report the loss
- Request a written confirmation of the loss from the police
✅ Step 2: Prepare the required document
Your application dossier must include the following:
- A written request from the employer for re-issuance (Form No. 11/PLI – Appendix I, Decree 152/2020/NĐ-CP)
- Two color photos (4x6cm, white background, full-face, no glasses, taken within the past 6 months)
- Police confirmation of the lost permit
- Approval document for the demand of foreign labor (if required)
- Notarized copy of a valid passport
- Other documents as required by authorities

✅ Step 3: Submit your application and wait for results
- Submit the dossier to the Department of Home Affairs where the employee is working
- Alternatively, submit via public postal services

What is the validity period of the re-issued permit?
According to
Article 15 – Decree 152/2020/NĐ-CP:
“The validity period of the re-issued work permit will be equal to the remaining validity of the lost permit.”
